Keep Pressing On

A famous mountain climbing resort in the Swiss Alps caters to businesses that encourage their employees to hike up the mountain trails together. The goal is to build camaraderie and to teach teamwork. Although it is about an eight hour trek to the summit, anyone in reasonably good shape can ascend to the top. In the morning, the hikers gather at the base of the mountain for a pep talk before starting the climb. Usually the group is so excited, they can hardly wait to head up the slopes, have a group picture taken, and celebrate the excitement of the journey they are embarking upon.

They hike for several hours before taking a break. Approximately halfway up the mountain stands a quaint alpine restaurant. About noon, the weary hikers trudge into the restaurant, peel off their hiking gear, and plop down by the fireplace to have a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and eat their lunch. With the mountain as their backdrop, the hikers savor the warm, cozy, picturesque setting.

Interestingly, after they are full and comfortable, fewer than half the hikers choose to continue climbing to the top of the mountain. It isn’t because they aren’t able; it isn’t because the climb suddenly appears too difficult. Their reluctance to continue is simply because they are satisfied with where they are. They’ve lost their drive to excel, to explore a new horizon, and to experience vistas they’d never previously imagined possible. They have tasted a bit of success, and they think it is good enough.

Many times, we approach life a lot like those full and comfortable hikers sitting in the restaurant enjoying the view. We have a goal to break a bad habit, to lose some weight, or to pay off our credit cards. At first, we’re so excited. We’re fired up and we go after it! The first leg of the climb up the mountain is powered by enthusiasm for our new goal. But over time, we get lazy and complacent. Maybe we see a little improvement, but then we get comfortable right where we are. This might not be a bad place, but we know it’s not where we’re supposed to be. Like those hikers sitting in that quaint restaurant, we are still perfectly capable of craning our necks and looking up the mountain. We’re not stretching our faith or our potential and we know it. Maybe you own a business, and you’ve experienced a bit of success. Lately, however, you’ve been coasting. Or maybe you set out to lose 20 pounds, you lose 10, and feel like all is good and you get complacent. Don ‘t stop halfway just because it’s easy! Instead, remember what it is that you really, really want. Put out the effort and go the whole way. to the top of the mountain.

Step out of your comfort zone today! Keep pursuing and keep believing. It doesn’t take any more effort to believe and stay filled with hope and faith than it does to develop a negative and defeated attitude. Get up every day and say, “This is going to be a great day! I believe my dreams are coming to pass. There are great things in store for me and everyone around me.” When you have that kind of attitude you are releasing God’s goodness. But it doesn’t come easily.

People who see their dreams come to pass are people who have resolve and backbone. They are the ones who refuse to settle for the little victories along the way and see themselves at the finish line, instead continuing on, pushing on toward the ultimate goal. No one wants to be mediocre. You are made for so much more. Realize that what your mind focuses on, it can achieve. It is up to you. Pay attention only to those silent whispers within that say “You can do it!”

It has been shown that addictions actually alter the brain’s capacity to function (one reference here, many more out there… start searching!), altering brain chemicals, neuro pathways, memory, ability to decide, and the ability to keep focused (like on a goal). If you (or someone you love) is struggling with not feeling success, there might be an addictive behavior in the way. And all addictions are rooted in an emotional concept called toxic shame. This shame, which propels feelings of ‘not good enough’, or perfectionism, or inadequacy is cyclic, and often times hidden from our daily life. But when you stop and think, analyze your thoughts, you might find this to be true.

Here is a list of addictions you might consider stopping (hopefully you don’t have any, but sometimes we have addictions that we are unaware of!)

• work
• gambling/money risk
• alcohol
• sex/pornography
• food/eating disorder
• co-dependency (very complex – research this one for sure – here’s a book about it)
• co-sexual addiction
• Anything else that you realize is really out of your control (like you can’t go without it, can’t get through your day without it, or use it to hide or cope or cover up something else)

Either way, join a 12 step program (like AA, SA, ARP, etc), get help, talk to friends, family, spouse, parents, etc, and it will unlock your true potential! If you want success in your life, whether in relationship, money, business, school, etc, you want to be on the best and fastest track possible. Get rid of those chains holding you back.

I do agree, also, that great teachers are there because they love helping others to learn and grow – if that’s not there, then it will go downhill, every time. I think this is a major problem with university – where Professors are there because they have a doctorate, and just lecturing a bunch of mumbo jumbo, not caring about the students advancement – just trying to show off, or prove a point, or fulfill a requirement so they can do research (This has been the case for me anyway).

If I can be frank – I think a lot of things are more in our control than we think, based on our attitudes and beliefs about ourselves and what’s around us. I hear people say things that seem innocent and superficial around us, to kids, or even to themselves – but I think they sink in much deeper in the subconscious and are not easily lost/let go; I feel that some things can be damaging or at least controlling of the outcome before the event even happens. (Yes, this is some of the stuff I’ve learned over the years with Bob Proctor, etc – but since there are at least a dozen or more independent teachers/mentors/coaches etc teaching the same or similar thing, I must conclude that there is a high degree of truth to it).

The thing that triggered this thought process and it’s sharing was the statement “I don’t think that I can make it happen for the 24 [students] at school as well as for my three children at the same time. To me it is impossible to give 100% at school and 100% at home.” as well as “I hope that I can stick to my guns and not go back to work full time.” I know I’m still working on this myself (even to the point of being hypocritical at times), but what I’ve learned is that you make a decision one way or another, and then work and perform how you need to to make the decision come true. Not just hope for the best. While I agree that what you’ve said can be true, and definitely a challenge, I believe that you need to choose the outcome now. When you get in the van to drive, you already have the destination in mind before leaving. You don’t just start driving randomly down streets, hoping that you’ll end up somewhere good in the end. Before your second child was born, did you think you could love another and be a mother to more than one? But, amazingly, now your capacity to love and care has grown to nurture three (plus husband + dog) – the same can happen if it’s a decision to give 100% in each of your capacities – you’ll find a way to do it. If deep down you really don’t want one or the other, your subconscious is aware of this, and will continue to make it seem like an insurmountable challenge. When you started your bootcamp last year, or whenever that was, did you think “I’ll just exercise and follow the plan and see what happens”? Or was it more like “I want to become ‘this fit’ and be more healthy, and this program will help me”? If the decision isn’t made up front, or at least at some point, then we’re just floating with the waves.

I know you probably know this stuff, but sometimes repetition really is the key to learning and success in life. Don’t take this the wrong way – I’m just sharing things I’ve learned.

I think it’s true, well most of it. But I suppose he doesn’t use any extreme language (like always/never) – just “most of the time”. I do think good and great ideas can come by a big “aha” moment out of the blue. But, most don’t come that way. There is, as Mentioned by Bob Proctor and related mentors, the “Law of Gender” – meaning it takes two opposites to combine, and then there is a period of gestation while a new idea comes out.
